Tom Harrell’s solo on “I Don’t Know”

Image

This solo transcription is part 2 from last week’s post on the Tom Harrell composition “I Don’t Know” from the album Visions. In learning this tune I noticed how incredibly fluid a player he is, regardless of what key he is playing. Most musicians would get nervous around a B Major 7 to A#min7 progression, but it is smooth sailing as he glides through the changes. I love his use of pentatonic structures throughout the entire solo, with every note sounding like it fits perfectly. Harrell also extends his phrasing beyond 2 and 4 measure cells and plays across the bar line without hesitation building tension and then relief throughout the solo.
